La Aurora Museum Complex One main attraction you would most likely want to go to is the La Aurora Museum Complex. The museum consists of Modern Art, children’s playground, a fairground, and a zoo. The La Aurora National Zoo has more than 100 species of native animals to Guatemala and Central American including rainforest animals like the spider monkey, parrots, macaws, jaguar, crocodiles, and coatimundi. Also African and Asian Animals are also contained. A children’s playground is also included there. The Museum of Modern art has a collection of 20th century Art. Work of Carlos Merida which is one of Guatemala’s most famous painters is held there. There’s mainly painting and sculptures in this museum. The National Palace of CultureThe National Palace of Culture is located in Guatemala City. Open Monday - Sunday from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and 2p.m. to 5p.m. This beautiful historical building was built January 1939 and finished November 1943. It was originally the headquarters of the President of Guatemala and now it is a national museum. The building has an eclectic style is a mix of Guatemalan colonial architecture with French and neoclassic influence.
The Semuc Champey
The Semuc Champey is a beautiful natural attraction in Guatemala’s Alta Verapaz; where the Cahabon River flows underground for about 1,150 ft. Above the Cahabon River is a natural limestone bridge that has formed and is home to a series of ponds and pools. The ponds and pools are feed by creeks and waterfalls running down the neighboring mountain slopes. Semuc Champey is a 7 hour drive from the capital, Guatemala City and a 3 hour drive from the city of Coban. To enter the park there is a fee of Q10.00 per person and Q5.00 per car.
Xetalul Amusement Park Xetalul Amusement Park is in the Retalhuleu Department in the southwest part of Guatemala. This park was opened in 2002 and it is the largest amusement park in Latin America. The park is open January 8th to October 31st, Thursday to Sunday and November 1st to December 15th, Wednesday to Sunday. From 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; there is an entrance fee of $10 for adults and $7 for children. Some of the popular rides include: Avalancha and Choconoy. Avalancha is a steel roller coaster with eight inversions and Choconoy is more of a family roller coaster.
Tikal National ParkThe Tikal National Park is located in the Peten Basin region in Northern Guatemala. The park has several remains of the ancient Maya Civilization. The remains were excavated between 1956 and 1969 and is the largest excavated site in the Americas’. The remains contain of Mayan tombs, monuments, temples and palaces. There is a Q150 entrance fee to enter the park between 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Also there is a Q1.50 fee to enter the Lithics museum and the Sylvannus Morley museum. Just a warning for people thinking about going here; you may not pay tips to any park guards, it will be considered bribing, which is a serious offence.
Guatemala Foods: Guatemala does not have a national dish. They do however have many foods that become a part of everyday meals. Tortilla (a thin corn pancake) is most often eaten in Guatemala. Black beans are eaten in almost every meal. Chicken, turkey, and beef are the most popular meats and mainly eaten with beans and rice. Guatemalan coffee is considered the best in the world. Guatemala Weather/ Climate: Guatemala Is separated into three different climate zones that include Tropical, temperate, and cool zones. The Tropical zone is around the coastal plain of the Pacific coast. The climate is usually hot and humid and exceeds from nearly 70 degrees Fahrenheit to 100 degrees Fahrenheit. The temperate zone rarely exceeds 85 degrees Fahrenheit and nights are comfortably cool. This area is where tourists destination. The cool zone is only slightly lower than the temperate zone, but at nights the temperature can get below freezing most of the time. Quetzaltenango in the northwestern highlands is the only major city in this climate. The rainy seasons start around mid-May and last until October or November and the dry season start in March and ends about early may. There are few rain showers and spread far apart, you can go weeks in Guatemala without seeing a single drop of water.
